Featherbed Lane is an old road which was severed by the M1 motorway. This route connects Featherbed Lane northwards to Bedmond Lane, and so can be considered as an extension of the old road. As such we refer to it as 'Featherbed Lane (North)'.

When the M1 motorway was widened a new balancing pond was constructed just south of Featherbed Lane, and a track was put in place parallel to the motorway to enable the Highways Agency to reach it. This provided an opportunity to create a through route for equestrians.

The County Council and the Secretary of State for Transport have executed a permissive path agreement to allow use of the route as a restricted byway. Either party can give 12 month's notice of withdrawal from the agreement.
